Word frequency counter for words and phrases

See which words and two- or three-word phrases occur most often. Check repetition in a draft, filter the results, and download the complete frequency table.

Your text and imported file contents are analyzed on this device. They are never uploaded, stored by us or included in analytics.

How it works

  1. Paste your text or import a UTF-8 TXT file within the displayed limits.
  2. Choose individual words, two-word phrases or three-word phrases.
  3. Choose whether capitals are distinct and whether to hide common English words.
  4. Filter the table to inspect a term, then copy or export all results as CSV or TXT.

How words and phrases are counted

Word boundaries come from your browser's English word segmenter, the same method used by Word Counter. A contraction such as don't is normally 1 word; well-known is normally 2. Numbers can count as words. In red blue red blue, red blue occurs 2 times among 3 overlapping two-word windows, so its share is 66.67%. Phrases do not cross sentence or line boundaries, but punctuation within a sentence is ignored. Browser locale-data versions can differ slightly.

Understand common-word filtering and percentages

The optional fixed English stopword list hides common words such as the, and, of, to and you. A phrase is hidden if it contains any listed word; filtering does not join the words on either side into a new phrase. Stopword matching ignores capitals even when word counting distinguishes them. The percentage denominator is all original word occurrences or valid phrase windows before filtering. Visible percentages can therefore total less than 100%.

Export the complete table

The page shows up to 200 matching rows to keep the table manageable. Search filters the visible rows; copying and downloading include all counted terms, including those beyond the preview limit. CSV percentages are numbers on a 0–100 scale with up to 4 decimal places. TXT uses tab-separated columns. CSV cells are quoted and formula-leading cells are escaped for spreadsheet safety. Character, word and export limits prevent excessive allocations; errors never represent a partial analysis as complete.

Frequency is a reading aid, not an SEO target

A repeated term may be necessary in instructions or awkward in a short paragraph. Read the surrounding sentences before changing it. This counter does not prescribe an ideal keyword density or predict search rankings, originality, readability or writing quality.

Frequently asked questions

Are capitals treated as different words?

By default, Apple and apple share a count. Select Distinguish capitals to count them separately. This setting does not change the source text.

How are hyphenated words and contractions counted?

Native English word segmentation normally splits a hyphenated form such as well-known into well and known, while keeping don't together. Typographic punctuation and browser locale data can affect boundaries; inspect the table if exact token rules matter.

Can it count repeated phrases?

Yes. Choose two- or three-word phrases. Windows overlap within each sentence and line. A phrase cannot span a sentence ending or a line break.

Which common words are hidden?

The fixed list includes a, an, and, are, as, at, be, been, being, but, by, can, could, did, do, does, for, from, had, has, have, he, her, here, hers, him, his, how, i, if, in, into, is, it, its, me, my, no, nor, not, of, on, or, our, ours, she, so, than, that, the, their, theirs, them, then, there, these, they, this, those, to, too, us, was, we, were, what, when, where, which, who, will, with, would, you, your and yours. It is a convenience list, not a complete grammar model.

Why do the percentages not add up to 100%?

They use all original word occurrences or phrase windows as the denominator. Hiding common words removes rows but keeps that denominator. A visible table filter or the 200-row preview limit can hide additional rows, and rounding can also affect the total.
