Why count words here

Your text never leaves your device, so essays, applications and unpublished work stay private. Counting works in every language, including Arabic, Urdu, Chinese and Japanese, where words aren't always separated by spaces.

Common limits to check against

A tweet on X allows 280 characters; a meta description shows about 155–160; a Google Business post allows 1,500 characters; LinkedIn posts 3,000. College application essays are often capped at 650 words, and a 500-word article takes about 2 minutes to read.

How reading and speaking time are estimated

Reading time uses 238 words per minute, the average silent reading speed of adults for non-fiction. Speaking time uses 150 words per minute, a comfortable pace for a presentation, so a 5-minute talk is about 750 words.

Frequently asked questions

Does it count characters with or without spaces?

Both. Characters counts everything, including spaces and line breaks; Characters without spaces leaves them out.

How are emoji counted?

Each emoji counts as one character, even when it is built from several code points, such as a skin-tone or family emoji.

Is my text saved or uploaded?

No. The counting happens in your browser, and nothing is stored after you close the page.
