Photo to Black and White

Remove color from photos while keeping their dimensions and transparent areas. Use smooth grayscale for portraits, or choose a separate two-tone mode for bold black and white artwork.

Everything runs in your browser on this device. Your files and calculations are never uploaded, stored or logged.

How it works

  1. Choose one or more JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC/HEIF images.
  2. Choose grayscale or two-tone mode and adjust brightness, contrast or the threshold.
  3. Preview the first image to check the effect.
  4. Make the images black and white, then download PNG files or a ZIP.

Grayscale versus two-tone

Grayscale retains shades between black and white, using perceived brightness: 29.9% red, 58.7% green and 11.4% blue. Two-tone maps every pixel to black or white at a threshold from 0 to 255. The default threshold is 128; increasing it makes more pixels black.

Dimensions, transparency and quality

A 2400 × 1600 image remains 2400 × 1600. Output is lossless PNG, and the alpha channel stays unchanged. Phone orientation is applied before processing. PNG can be larger than the original JPEG; removing color does not guarantee a smaller file. The preview is reduced to at most 1000 pixels on its longest side.

Frequently asked questions

Can I keep transparent backgrounds?

Yes. Alpha transparency is preserved in PNG output, including partly transparent edges.

Does black and white mean only two colors?

Grayscale keeps many brightness levels. Select two-tone mode when you want only black and white.

Can I convert several photos together?

Yes. The same settings are applied to each accepted image, with individual PNG downloads and a ZIP for a batch.

Is this suitable for printing?

It produces a grayscale or two-tone image. Printer color profiles, halftoning and paper settings remain the responsibility of your printing software.
