Make images smaller without uploading them

How it works

Why compress images here

Most image compressors upload your pictures to a server. This one works in your browser, so your photos never leave your phone or computer. It is free, adds no watermark and needs no account.

Camera and location data (EXIF) is not copied into the compressed images.

How much smaller will my images get?

A typical 3–4 MB phone photo shrinks to about 1–2 MB at Balanced and 0.3–0.5 MB at Strong. Strong also limits the long side to 2,048 pixels, which is plenty for screens and messaging; Balanced keeps up to 4,096 pixels.

Many job and government upload forms cap images at 1–2 MB, and web pages load fastest with images under 200 KB.

What happens to PNG and WebP files

JPG stays JPG. PNG and WebP images without transparency are saved as JPG, which is usually 5–10 times smaller for photos and screenshots of photos.

Images with transparent areas stay PNG, so logos and cut-outs keep their see-through parts. If an image is already well optimized, you get the original back unchanged.

Frequently asked questions

Will compression reduce quality?

At Balanced, the difference is hard to see on any screen. Strong trades some fine detail for much smaller files, which suits messaging and web pages.

Why did my PNG become a JPG?

PNG files without transparency are converted to JPG because it is far smaller for photos. Images with transparency stay PNG.

Why is one of my images unchanged?

If compressing wouldn't make a file at least 1% smaller, the original is kept so you never get a worse version of an already optimized image.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser on your own device. Your images are never sent to us or anyone else.
