Split an image into tiles

Choose a still photo and divide it into a grid. Check the cut lines before splitting, then download PNG tiles in row order or collect them in one ZIP.

Your files stay on this device. Processing runs locally in a browser worker without uploading or logging their contents.

How it works

  1. Choose one JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC/HEIF still image. Animated files are not supported.
  2. Enter the number of rows and columns, from 1 to 10 each. Neither can exceed the corresponding source pixel dimension.
  3. Check the grid preview and source dimensions. The preview is scaled down; output tiles retain source pixels.
  4. Split the image, then download individual PNG tiles or the ZIP containing all tiles.

Choose rows and columns

Rows divide the image from top to bottom; columns divide it from left to right. A 2-row by 3-column grid produces six tiles. Each output name records its row and column, starting at 1. The ZIP follows this same row-major order, so the top row comes first.

How edge pixels are divided

An image cannot always split into perfectly equal whole-pixel widths. Boundaries use floor(column × width ÷ columns) and the same rule for rows. A 1001-pixel-wide image split into three columns produces widths of 333, 334 and 334 pixels. Every source pixel belongs to exactly one tile: boundaries introduce neither gaps nor overlapping pixels.

Preview and output formats

The grid preview uses a smaller decoded copy to keep the page responsive. The tile exports use the oriented source dimensions, with no intentional resizing or JPEG recompression. PNG keeps transparency, but browser image decoding can change colour profiles and re-encoding removes original metadata. This is not a lossless container extraction or a guarantee of identical compressed bytes.

Download and reassemble the tiles

Use the row and column names to put tiles back in their original positions. Unequal edge dimensions are expected when the source size is not divisible by the grid. This tool makes image files, not paginated print sheets. Use PDF Poster Maker when you need a large picture spread across printable pages.

Device limits and supported images

The tool checks compressed bytes, decoded dimensions, image side lengths and retained PNG/ZIP bytes. There are at most 100 tiles. Large PNG tiles and their ZIP coexist in memory, so a job can exceed output limits even when the source image is small. Reduce the source dimensions or choose fewer tiles. Animated PNG, animated WebP, GIF, SVG and video are not accepted.

Frequently asked questions

Will splitting remove any source pixels?

No. Whole-pixel boundaries cover the entire oriented source exactly once. Tile widths or heights can differ by one pixel.

Can I make an Instagram puzzle grid?

You can split a picture into a chosen grid, but this tool does not choose a social platform crop, posting order or current profile layout for you.

Are HEIC photos supported?

Yes. HEIC/HEIF still images are decoded locally after selection. Unsupported image sequences or malformed files are rejected.

Does this create a printable poster?

No. It exports PNG tiles. PDF Poster Maker creates printable PDF sheets with print margins and overlap.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Preview generation, splitting and ZIP creation run in this browser on your device.
