How it works
- For feet and inches → cm, type the feet and the inches (e.g. 5 and 8).
- For cm → feet and inches, type the centimetres (e.g. 172).
- Read the answer, or tap Copy.
The formula
1 inch is exactly 2.54 cm and 1 foot is 12 inches, so cm = (feet × 12 + inches) × 2.54. 5 ft 8 in is 68 inches, which is 172.72 cm. The other way, divide by 2.54 to get inches, then take whole feet: 172 cm is 67.7 inches, or 5 ft 7.7 in.
Why the result never shows 12 inches
Inches are rounded to one decimal before whole feet are taken, so 182.8 cm shows as 6 ft 0 in, not 5 ft 12 in. That keeps the answer in the form people say and write on forms.
Where you'll need it
Passports, visa and job forms, sports and doctor visits often ask for height in one system when you know it in the other. The UK, US and Canada commonly use feet and inches for height while most of the world uses centimetres; for BMI, use the BMI calculator, which takes either.
