Extract GIF frames as PNG images
Save one numbered frame or every frame from a GIF. Each PNG shows the complete composited canvas at that point in the animation, including earlier artwork that the GIF keeps on screen.
Your GIF stays on this device. Frames and the ZIP are created locally without uploading or logging animation contents.
How it works
- Choose one GIF file.
- Select one numbered frame or all frames.
- Extract the PNGs and check the first exported image preview.
- Download an individual PNG or the all-frames ZIP with timing.json.
Complete frames, not isolated patches
Many GIFs store only the changed rectangle for each frame. Saving that rectangle alone can omit the background or earlier artwork. This tool applies frame offsets, palettes and disposal instructions before saving the full logical-screen PNG. Restore-to-background and restore-previous disposal modes are supported, along with interlaced image data and binary transparency.
Frame numbers and timing
Frame numbering starts at one and follows the GIF's stored image sequence. A selected later frame still requires decoding earlier frames to reconstruct its canvas. All-frame downloads include timing.json with the original delay for each frame in milliseconds and the stored repeat count. A delay of zero remains zero in the manifest; viewers may impose a minimum display time. PNG files are still images and do not retain animation by themselves.
Limits and unsupported GIF features
The GIF header, block lengths, image bounds and compressed code stream are checked before frame allocation. Phones and low-memory devices allow up to 120 frames, one million logical-screen pixels and 32 million cumulative frame pixels; larger devices have higher limits. All-frame PNGs and their ZIP share an output memory budget. GIF plain-text rendering extensions, user-input flags and reserved disposal modes are unsupported. Damaged or truncated files fail without a partial download.
No new detail is created
PNG preserves the decoded GIF colours and binary transparency without another palette reduction. It does not recover colours or resolution that the GIF already discarded. The output uses the GIF's logical canvas dimensions; extraction does not upscale or sharpen the artwork.
Frequently asked questions
Will a PNG stay animated?
No. Each PNG is one still frame. Choose all frames to save the sequence and its timing manifest.
Can I extract a frame other than the first?
Yes. Enter its one-based frame number. If the number exceeds the stored frame count, extraction reports an invalid-frame error.
Why is a PNG larger than its GIF patch?
The PNG is a complete logical-screen image. A GIF patch may store only the rectangle that changed.
Is transparency preserved?
Supported GIF transparency and disposal instructions are applied to the composited canvas. GIF supports fully transparent or opaque pixels, not partial transparency.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Validation, decoding, compositing and ZIP creation run in a worker on this device.
