Calculate with fractions
Type two fractions or mixed numbers, choose the operation, and get the answer in lowest terms, as a mixed number and as a decimal, for homework, recipes or measurements.
Calculations run on this device. We don't see, store or log the numbers you enter.
How it works
- Type the first number, for example 3/4 or 1 1/2.
- Choose add, subtract, multiply or divide.
- Type the second number and read the answer.
Why use this calculator
The answer is always reduced to lowest terms and shown three ways, so you can copy whichever your worksheet or recipe needs. It works on any phone, offline once loaded.
How the answer is worked out
To add or subtract, both fractions are put over a common denominator: 1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6. To multiply, multiply tops and bottoms: 2/3 × 9/10 = 18/30 = 3/5. To divide, multiply by the second fraction turned upside down: 5/8 ÷ 1/4 = 5/8 × 4/1 = 20/8 = 5/2, which is 2 1/2 or 2.5. Mixed numbers are turned into improper fractions first: 1 1/2 is 3/2.
Writing numbers
Use a slash for fractions (3/4), a space between the whole part and the fraction (2 3/4), a minus sign for negatives (−1/2) and a full stop for decimals (0.75, turned into 3/4).
