Mean, median and mode

For 2, 3, 4, 5, 5, 6, 8, 8, 9 and 2: the mean is the sum divided by the count, 52 ÷ 10 = 5.2. The median is the middle value once sorted (here the average of the 5th and 6th values, 5 and 5, so 5). The mode is the most frequent value; this list has three: 2, 5 and 8.

Which average to use

The mean uses every value but is pulled by outliers: salaries of 30, 32, 35 and 300 have a mean of 99.25 but a median of 33.5, which better describes a typical salary. Use the median for skewed data such as prices or incomes, and the mode for the most common choice or size.

Pasting numbers

You can paste a column from Excel or Google Sheets directly. Anything that isn't a number is listed as ignored, so you can spot typos. If your decimal separator is a comma (12,5), separate numbers with spaces or new lines instead.

Frequently asked questions

What if no number repeats?

Then the list has no mode, and the calculator says so.

Can I use negative numbers and decimals?

Yes, for example −3.5 or 12,75.

Is there a limit on how many numbers?

No practical limit: thousands of numbers are calculated instantly on your device.
