Calculate running pace, time and distance

Enter two values to find the third. Compare minutes per kilometre and per mile, then view cumulative splits at a constant pace. These are arithmetic estimates, not race-performance predictions.

Everything runs in this browser. Your inputs and results are not uploaded, stored by this tool or included in analytics.

How it works

  1. Choose whether to calculate pace, finish time or distance, then select kilometres or miles.
  2. Enter the known distance and elapsed duration or pace. Use MM:SS or HH:MM:SS for durations, such as 25:00 or 01:30:00.
  3. Compare both pace units and speeds, open the steady-pace splits, or copy the results.

Pace, speed and finish time

Pace is elapsed time divided by distance. A 5 km run in 25:00 has a pace of 5:00 per km and a speed of 12 km/h. To estimate time, multiply distance by pace; to find distance, divide elapsed time by pace. The calculator assumes a constant average pace and does not account for stops, terrain or fatigue.

Kilometres and miles

One international mile is exactly 1.609344 km. A pace of 5:00/km therefore equals 8:02.8032/mile, displayed as 00:08:03. Both pace outputs and the split times use the same unrounded calculation.

Read elapsed durations correctly

Use MM:SS or HH:MM:SS, with seconds and the middle minutes field between 00 and 59. For example, 5:30 means five minutes thirty seconds; 5.30 is not a duration. Hours may exceed 24 because this is elapsed time rather than a clock time. Output durations use HH:MM:SS, rounded to the nearest second.

Steady-pace cumulative splits

Splits show the total elapsed time at each distance marker, including a final fractional marker such as 5.2 km. Longer distances use larger whole-unit intervals to keep the table at no more than 101 rows. Valid outputs are 0.000001 to 1,000,000 km, at least one second total, no more than 365 days, and at least one second per km; the per-mile pace cannot exceed 365 days.

Frequently asked questions

Can I calculate a target 5K finish time?

Yes. Choose Finish time, select kilometres, enter 5 for distance and your planned pace per km. For example, 5:00 per km gives 00:25:00. This estimates constant-pace time; it does not predict how fast you can run.

What is the difference between speed and pace?

Speed measures distance per hour, so a larger value is faster. Pace measures time per kilometre or mile, so a smaller value is faster.

Can I enter a marathon distance?

Yes. Enter 42.195 km for a marathon or 21.0975 km for a half marathon. Use your elapsed time to calculate average pace, or a planned pace to estimate finish time.

Are split times rounded before calculating the finish?

No. The table calculates from unrounded pace and rounds each displayed duration to the nearest second. The last row uses the calculated total time.
