Make a passport-size photo at home

Take a photo against a plain wall, frame your face in the box, and get a photo at the exact size plus a sheet of copies to print on 4 × 6 in paper. It all happens on your device.

How it works

  1. Take a photo against a plain white or light wall, or choose one you already have.
  2. Pick the size: 35 × 45 mm, 2 × 2 in, 40 × 60 mm, or enter your own in mm.
  3. Move and resize the box so your head and shoulders sit in it as the rules for your document ask.
  4. Tap Make photo, then download the single photo for online forms and the print sheet for a photo shop.

Sizes and pixels

Photos are made at 300 DPI, the resolution photo labs print at. 35 × 45 mm, used for UK passports, Schengen visas and in many other countries, becomes 413 × 531 pixels. 2 × 2 in (51 × 51 mm), used for US passports and visas, becomes 600 × 600 pixels. 40 × 60 mm becomes 472 × 709 pixels. The print sheet is 4 × 6 in (10 × 15 cm, 1800 × 1200 pixels), with as many copies as fit and a thin line to cut along: 8 copies at 35 × 45 mm.

Getting a photo accepted

Rules differ by country and document, so check the official requirements first. Most ask for: a plain white or light grey background with no shadows; face straight to the camera with a neutral expression, eyes open and mouth closed; no glasses, or no glare on them; even light from the front, such as facing a window in daylight; and the head filling about 70–80% of the photo height, from chin to top of hair (for a 35 × 45 mm photo that is 29–34 mm). Have someone else take the photo from about 1.5 m away, not a selfie, which distorts the face.

Printing

Download the print sheet and order a standard 4 × 6 in (10 × 15 cm) photo print at a photo shop, pharmacy or online lab; make sure it is printed at 100% without cropping or "fit to page". Then cut along the grey lines. A home printer works too on photo paper at the highest quality setting.

Frequently asked questions

Will my photo be accepted for my passport?

We can't promise that: acceptance depends on the rules of the authority and on the photo itself. This tool gives the exact size and resolution; the background, lighting, pose and head size are up to the photo you take. Check the official requirements before you submit.

Can it remove or whiten the background?

No. Background removal can alter the outline of the face and hair, which some authorities reject. Take the photo against a plain white or light wall instead.

Which file do I upload to an online form?

The single photo (named …-passport.jpg). If the form also has a file size limit, such as 50 KB, run the photo through Compress image to KB; the pixels stay the same.

The tool says my photo may look soft. What does that mean?

The area in the box has fewer pixels than the photo needs, so it had to be enlarged. Stand closer, use the main (back) camera, or pick a sharper photo.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser on your own device.
