Convert land area units
Enter an area in any unit to see it in square feet, square metres, gaj, marla, kanal, decimal, katha, bigha, acres and hectares. Pick the marla size and the bigha region your documents use.
Calculations run on this device. We don't see, store or log the values you enter.
How it works
- Enter the area and choose its unit, for example 5 marla.
- Choose the marla size (225 or 272.25 sq ft) and the region for bigha and katha.
- Read the area in every other unit, or tap Copy.
Marla and kanal in Pakistan
A kanal is always 20 marla, but the marla has two sizes. Most housing societies use 225 sq ft, so 5 marla = 1,125 sq ft and 1 kanal = 4,500 sq ft. Older revenue records use 272.25 sq ft, where 1 kanal = 5,445 sq ft and 8 kanal make exactly 1 acre (43,560 sq ft). If a plot's size in square feet doesn't match, check which marla the deed or society uses.
Bigha and katha by region
The bigha has no national size. In Bangladesh and West Bengal, 1 bigha = 20 katha = 14,400 sq ft (about 33 decimal), and 1 katha = 720 sq ft. In Uttar Pradesh a bigha is 27,000 sq ft, in Bihar 27,220 sq ft (20 katha of 1,361 sq ft) and in Rajasthan the pucca bigha is 27,225 sq ft. Sizes can differ even between districts, so for a sale or a legal document, use the figure in the land record.
Units with one fixed size
1 gaj (square yard) = 9 sq ft. 1 decimal (also called cent or shatak) = 1/100 acre = 435.6 sq ft. 1 acre = 43,560 sq ft = 4,046.86 m², and 1 hectare = 10,000 m² = 2.471 acres. 1 square metre = 10.764 sq ft.

Frequently asked questions
How many square feet are in 1 marla?
225 sq ft in most housing societies, or 272.25 sq ft in older revenue records. Choose the one your documents use; the converter shows both.
How many bigha are in 1 acre?
It depends on the region: about 3.03 bigha in Bangladesh and West Bengal, and about 1.6 bigha in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Rajasthan.
